This activity, like many of my kiddo activities and printables, came from V’s willingness to learn. Lately she has been asking over & over, “mama, what does this color & this color make”. So I felt it time to break out the teaching of primary & secondary colors, and created this little printable to do so.
These printables will provide hands-on-experience in learning primary and secondary colors. With this activity your kiddo will be able to learn to recognize and sort the primary and secondary colors.
The primary colors – red, blue and yellow – are the most important colors because you can make several other colors from these three colors. Secondary colors – green, orange and violet (purple) – are made by mixing two primary colors. Each secondary color is made from the two primary colors closest to it on the color wheel. Primary colors cannot be made from other colors. Just by mixing these three primary colors, you can get all the colors of the rainbow.
- 3-page paint palette printable (see below)
- 1” circle punch or scissors
- paint brush
- red, yellow, & blue paint
- bowl, water & paper towel
- laminator & lamination sheets (OR) clear contact paper
- Print out your 3 printables.
- Laminate all 3 printables or seal with clear contact paper, for durability & reusability.
- Using the 1” circle punch, punch out all dots on page three.
- Squirt out red, yellow, & blue paint (the three primary colors), in the three according spots on page one, the mixing page.
- Using the primary color keys for each white circle on the paint palette, combine the two colors listed. Have your child talk about the two colors they are combining & their results.
- After all three secondary colors are created, move over to page two, the matching page.
- Next, have your child figure out the solutions on page two by referencing their painting results from page one. Have them match the circles, using the punched-out dots.
- After finishing the activities and talking to your child about primary and secondary colors, have them decipher the two by placing the remaining punched-out dots on page one (on the paint palette) under the applicable heading.
♥♥♥ alternatives ♥♥♥
- Have your child color with crayons (or paint) in the results spots on page one and two, instead of using the included dots.
- For a portable version of page two, add velcro dots to the back of the dots to secure.
